Some Facts to Consider!
Many requests for flights to organizations such as Angel Flight are turned down due to the known lack of volunteer pilots. The intent is to not create a false hope.
- If the request for a flight is scheduled, it then becomes a waiting game to see if one of their members is willing to accept it. If a flight is picked up it usually happens at the last minute.
- If a party does get to their destination, they eventually need to get back home.
- Most volunteer pilots need good weather to complete a trip.
- Of the flights that are accepted, close to half are canceled. This is mainly due to weather.
- In Montana during 2005, over half of the scheduled flights were canceled. This trend is continuing in 2006.
- Only about 20% of the actual need is being met.
- Requests are expected to double or triple over the next 3 to 5 years.
- With Mercy Xpress operating, other local charities would be able to have more funds available to help more people because they wouldn’t be paying for transportation.
In the event a sick or injured person is flown by air ambulance for medical treatment, family members are on their own in getting to were their loved one was taken. Often they arrive too late.
Most people don’t even know the need exists or where to go for help if they are in need of help.
